If the thought of spending an entire day on a plane to get to the other side of the world isn't for you, then break the journey down with an added mini-break on the way there.
Here are our top five long layovers for flights between Europe and Australia. Most people haven't thought of the last one.
1. Singapore
Such an easy country to navigate; the airport is connected to downtown in around half an hour. While you are there visit Gardens by the Bay and the iconic Marina Bay Sands.
2. Abu Dhabi
Deserts, mountains, beaches, parks, and wildlife. Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, and explore the Corniche with its 8km of manicured blue-flag waterfront.
3. Delhi
In-your-face culture. Worth a visit alone for the ivory-white marble Taj Mahal, named one of the Wonders of the World. Explore the markets and get an authentic taste of Indian cuisine.
4. Bangkok
Visit the temples, and explore the bustling markets to enjoy traditional Thai street food. Take a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River in the evening or head out to the wilder parts of town.
5. L.A. or San Francisco
We rarely consider flying the "wrong way round" but the flight times are the same and often the flights themselves are cheaper. Both LA and San Francisco are easily reached from their respective airports and within an hour of clearing customs, you could be sipping in Hollywood or gnawing on an In-and-Out Burger by the Golden Gate Bridge.
